Note: If you purchased a copy of my 2007 book, The Telephone Interviewer's Handbook: How to Conduct Standardized Conversations, published by Jossey-Bass/John Wiley & Sons, make sure that you do not have the initial print, as it contains over 80 substantive errors. You can download the errata sheet here. There are two ways to tell if you have the wrong version: (1) Look at page 224, Table 7.8 "Summary of Probing Do's and Don'ts." The following two probes should be in the "Don't" column: "say anything that will influence answers" and "lengthen an interview by probing unnecessarily." If they are in the "Do" column, you have the wrong printing. (2) On page iv (across from "Contents"), the very last line should read "PB Printing 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2". If it reads "PB Printing 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1" you have the wrong printing. Above all, do not purchase a "used" copy, as you will most assuredly get the wrong version.

From 1992  to 2003, I founded UO's Oregon Survey Research Laboratory, managing 280+ projects, bringing in about $8 million in small grants and contracts, developing and documenting protocols, gathering data on basic methodological questions, and hiring and training staff, a staff of about 30, of whom about 15 were in fully benefited positions (including one postdoc, three Faculty Fellows, four Graduate Research Assistants, plus  about six more graduate students who completed their PhDs while in OSRL). I returned to basic research, writing, and teaching with huge relief. Two years later, the two guys who replaced me proved they were not up to the task, and UO closed OSRL.
