Description of Internship Positions:

1) Education and Promotion Assistant

Assist coordinator in program development, special projects, records management and special event planning, all aimed at promoting civic and social responsibility for our environmental future. Depending on time of year, intern would assist in the management of records in database format and Excel; develop flyers and information handouts; assist with creative development of educational program in schools; help plan community junk art contest or consumer survey project, write or research for newsletter articles; and participate with all staff in handling basic office and phone duties.

2) Creative Assistant for Education and Promotion

Assist education coordinator in creative development of outreach efforts aimed at promoting civic and social responsibility for our environmental future.

Design PowerPoint presentations, activities and speeches that teach a specific set of ideas; repair and create educational displays for local events; design flyers and other outreach materials; and participate with all staff in handling basic office and phone duties.

3) Develop and Design Consumer Awareness Survey

We are looking for a high level intern who could work closely with BRING’s education coordinator and the Lane County Master Recycler Program to develop, manage and analyze a statistically accurate survey that Master Recycler volunteers would conduct at grocery stores.

Intern would take the lead in keeping the project moving: meeting with stakeholders, drafting survey questions, developing the data system and reports.

The intern should have these specific skills or experiences for all three positions:

Excellent communication skills, organizational skills, analytical skills.

Proficiency in MSWord, general database and Excel software.

Able to work independently, self-motivated and responsible.

Able to follow instructions, work with others, and meet deadlines.

For position #3: Strong knowledge and experience with surveys.

Time requirements (hours per week and/or number of terms/months…)

Student should expect to work a minimum of 5 hours per week in office and 5 or more independently.

Internships must be a minimum of 1 full term, preferably 2 or more.

What is BRING?

BRING Recycling is one of the oldest non-profit recycling organizations in the nation. Founded in 1971, BRING was formed to promote what was then considered a radical concept—recycling. Today, 90% of Lane County households recycle. More than 200,000 tons of waste are recycled every year.

BRING has pioneered groundbreaking programs that are now part of everyday life, including:

• Curbside pickup of recyclables • In-the-schools education

• Building deconstruction • Resale of used building materials

• Collection of hard-to-recycle materials, such as computers

BRING’s Mission

BRING promotes a healthy and sustainable environment through education, innovative conservation programs, and community involvement in conserving natural resources. We help people understand the connection between the resources they use and the clean air, pure water and wild places they value.

BRING’s Services

Education :BRING offers classroom and after- school programs, tours, workshops and educational resources for children and adults.

Information & Referral: BRING provides information and referral on recycling and resource conservation by phone, newsletter and web site, including information on how to recycle or dispose of dozens of household items.

Used Building Materials : BRING offers the widest selection of used building materials between Portland and San Francisco at its Reuse Warehouse at 86641 Franklin Blvd. (off I-5 near Seavey Loop). BRING picks up usable materials in the Eugene/Springfield area, free of charge. Materials in good condition may also be dropped off at the Warehouse. Donated items are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Deconstruction : BRING’s licensed and bonded decon crew dismantles buildings to salvage reusable materials, such as cabinets, sinks, doors, windows, flooring, lumber and so forth. Donations of salvaged materials are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Recycling : BRING collects, processes and markets household recyclables at the county transfer station and at public drop-sites serving residents without curbside service. BRING promotes the collection of hard-to-recycle materials such as plastic plant pots, styrofoam, computers, televisions and athletic shoes.

Each year BRING:

• Reclaims 2,400 tons of recyclable materials

• Salvages and resells 500 tons of reusable building materials

• Answers 7,000 requests for information

• Reaches 8,000 subscribers with our newsletter

• Educates 15,000 children and adults.
