HIV Alliance: MSM Outreach

Organization:
To provide community education and advocacy to promote awareness and understanding of HIV disease. To empower individual through education and support to make health choices to prevent further infection. To provide health care and support services to those living with HIV.

Prevention programs help those at greatest risk, including gay/bi men; other men who have sex with men (MSM); injection drug users, their sexual partners, and children. As a volunteer/intern, you can be assured that your time and effort will be greatly appreciated. There is a great personal satisfaction in knowing that you are taking an active stance against the HIV pandemic. The client interactions will be personally rewarding. The staff is a wonderful, friendly, supportive group.

Position description:
Comfortably and professionally interact with MSM population
Provide information and safe sex supplies
Provide appropriate documentation of interactions
Provide information and appropriate referrals as requested
Observe cultural norms
Incorporate harm reduction in conversation
Go to outreach locations—bars, parks, beaches, online, community groups, tabling at community events
Office support: Data input, Safe sex packet preparation, Brochure ordering/organization coordinating

Specific skills or experiences needed:
Knowledge of HIV and willingness to be further trained
Commitment to a client-centered, non-coercive, non-judgmental approach to direct services
Ability to create and maintain clear professional boundaries with clients
Sex-positive attitude toward HIV prevention
Record keeping and organizational skills
Team player who is self-motivated, energetic, and enthusiastic
Ability to pass agency criminal background check
TB test

Training provided:
HIV 101; Specific outreach venue training where applicable; An understanding of the Agency Outreach protocol; Intervention, harm reduction, and client-centered approaches

Time requirements:
Flexible hours required, including some evenings and weekend
At least 6 hours per week in addition to days training.
Internships are offered fall, winter, and spring terms.
