The Arboretum is a 208-acre site within 10 minutes of the UO. Located along the Coast Fork of the Willamette River, the Arboretum features seven miles of trails which pass through conifer forest, oak savannah, grassland, and riparian areas. The Arboretum’s Education Program offers year-round guided walks and workshops for both adults and children. Spring and fall Natural History Programs serve over 3,000 Elementary School children annually.
Position description:
Lead young students (K-5th grade) during the Spring Discovery Tours program
Lead students on seasonal, morning, interactive nature walks/interpretive tours and/or
afternoon environmental education activity sessions
Help children discover the joy of the natural world
Engage all the students’ senses on the “blind tail”
Help students build a watershed model or make animal track casts
These exciting activities build on concepts taught during the students’ morning tour
Specific skills or experiences needed:
18 hours of training provided
Sincere interest in exploring nature with children
Some experience working with children
Basic background in the natural sciences
Time requirements:
Requires ability to work a minimum of two mornings (9:30-11:30) or afternoons
(11:30-1:30) per week, April 19-June 11, plus attend training March 31-April 18.
Internships are offered fall and spring terms.

Training includes: an orientation to the Arboretum and education program; indoor and outdoor sessions covering program topics, teaching techniques and activities; opportunities to observe experienced guides leading tours; monthly lectures or walks on various natural history topics.

Design new, interactive natural history displays for the Arboretum Visitor Center
Create informational displays in the two kiosks on site
