Campus Organizer Job Description
Yearlong Internship Available for the 2004-5 School Year!
Summary: Planned Parenthood Health Services of Southwestern Oregon is looking for a responsible, dedicated, resolutely pro-choice student to fill the Campus Organizing Internship. Campus Organizers are essential in educating their fellow students about the importance of reproductive rights issues.
Position Locations: We are looking for Campus Organizers at the following schools: University of Oregon, Oregon State University, Southern Oregon University, Southwestern Oregon Community College.
Reports to: Field Organizer
Responsibilities :
- Work with Field Organizer to develop and implement a nine-month grassroots organizing plan and establish goals relating to that plan that will include: measurable outcomes, appropriate data tracking, volunteer recruitment and retention, trainings for activists and volunteer leadership development.
- Plan for and implement campus-based events including:
- National Young Women’s Day of Action (October);
- Anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision (January);
- National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers (March);
- Choice Celebrations/Education Forums (at least one per term).
- Mobilize students to attend the Pro-Choice Lobby Day (in early February);
- Conduct educational outreach activities about relevant choice issues on campus including, but not limited to, tabling events, job/volunteer fairs, campus rallies, etc.;
- Develop and implement effective recruitment strategies for Planned Parenthood Health Services of Southwestern Oregon’s email action network (PPAN);
- Develop and implement strategies to collect signatures for the Freedom of Choice Act Citizen’s Petition;
- Work with students, faculty, staff, and appropriate student and community groups to generate interest in choice issues and to establish a Planned Parenthood presence on campus;
- Report data collected from organizing work on campus to the Field Organizer through regularly scheduled phone calls, as well as through email and fax;
- Find a replacement Organizer at the end of the internship;
- Perform other duties as they arise.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 6 months effective grassroots organizing experience or campus activism experience preferred;
- Knowledge of and strong commitment to pro-choice and reproductive rights issues and Planned Parenthood Health Services of Southwestern Oregon’s mission and goals;
- Knowledge and understanding of campus life, active student organizations, and university policies regarding campus organizing or activism;
- Excellent academic record and some flexibility in work/school schedule;
- Ability to prioritize and handle a variety of projects simultaneously;
- Ability to produce concrete results with off-site supervision;
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
- Ability to provide own local transportation is a plus.
Details:
This internship begins in early October and lasts until the end of the academic year. The internship is based on your college campus. The Campus Organizing Intern will receive an expense allowance of $100 a month to cover such expenses as transportation, copying, and food. The Campus Organizing Intern is asked to dedicate an average of 5-8 hours a week to the position and to document daily activities. Internships with Planned Parenthood Health Services of Southwestern Oregon are an excellent way to build your resume while gaining valuable experience with a non-profit advocacy organization. Planned Parenthood Health Services of Southwestern Oregon will work with your school to ensure academic credit where applicable.
