Position description:
We typically will create expectations/duties depending on the intern's field of interest, availability, and current skills.
Specific skills or experiences needed:
A willingness to accomplish a varied range of tasks (the mundane to the innovative) and to be a positive representative of Red Cross for the community.
Time requirements:
Depends on position and department, and student's commitment.
Internships are offered fall, winter, spring, and summer terms.
Contact the organization as soon as possible before the time you wish to intern there.
All volunteers are required to attend a free American Red Cross orientation. Volunteers wishing to enroll in a Red Cross First Aid/CPR course may do so at no cost and as space allows, with a suggested donation of $25.00 to go towards course expenses.
EMERGENCY SERVICES
Disaster Action Team (DAT) Respond to minor or major local disasters, working directly with victims or through support services, via this 24/7 on-call emergency program. Local experience and additional training/instruction provide the experience required to go on national or international assignments. Four Disaster Service classes are required (18 hours total) and provided at no cost. Minimum age is 18; 1-year commitment preferred.
Community Disaster Education Presenter Educate the community through businesses, civic groups, clubs, churches, or other organizations on how to become prepared for disasters. Introduction to Disaster Services and Community Disaster Education workshop required and provided at no cost. Minimum age is 18; 1-year commitment desired. Able to do in conjunction with DAT position.
Disaster Support/Projects Update vendor records, perform shelter surveys, provide mental health services, maintain national records, order supplies…these are a sampling of additional services needed. Related Disaster Services training, as recommended per director, provided at no cost. Minimum age is 18; one-time project or ongoing support. Able to do in conjunction with DAT position.
HEALTH AND SAFETY SERVICES (check with area office for FAST position availability)
Health & Safety Instructor Teach lifesaving First Aid and/or CPR/AED (Automated External Defibrillation) and/or youth safety courses at your local district office, community sites/schools, and workplaces. Must have Red Cross certifications as required; most fees waived if commitment to teach 5 classes is made. Criminal background check required when working with youth. Minimum age is 17.
First Aid Service Team (FAST) Adult Mentor and supervise FAST youth at community events, acting as a technical resource and/or immediate responder when necessary. Must have Red Cross certification(s) as required. A one-time donation of $30.00 is suggested, to cover required attire and identification. Criminal background and driving record check required. Minimum age is 21.
First Aid Service Team (FAST) Youth Respond to first aid emergencies at over 50 community events annually and maintain required supplies and documentation. Youth also participate at school health fairs and network to interest other youth to become involved as FAST volunteers. Must have Red Cross certification(s) as required. A one-time donation of $30.00 is suggested, to cover required attire and identification. Age range is 14-18.
BLOOD SERVICES (all counties other than Lane)
Blood Volunteer Recruitment Assist in recruitment and registration of blood donors for local blood drives. Work at district office or from home. Minimum age is 18; 3-month commitment desired.
Blood Drive Registration/Canteen Register blood donors on day of drive and assist with escorting and canteen provisions after donation. May be asked to make repeated walks between service area and canteen. Minimum age is 17; 3-month commitment desired.
FINANCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Annual Campaign Chair/District Chair Recruit core campaign leadership and provide support and motivation to District Chairs for our largest annual financial campaign. Be a key community and administration liaison and attend all campaign activities. Must be able to commit for campaign duration of 1-2 months.
Annual Campaign Team Captain Provide strong leadership by recruiting and managing a team of campaigners and assist in soliciting operational gifts. Must be able to commit for campaign duration of 1-2 months.
Annual Campaign Assistant Support the department during the campaign by soliciting donations, assisting in reaching goals, and heading campaign projects. Minimum age is 18; must be able to commit for campaign duration of 1-2 months.
Development/Clerical Assistant Assist department with donor and sponsor relations by creating correspondence and providing data entry support. Minimum age is 16; 3-month commitment desired.
Fund Raising Projects/Events Support various fund raising projects and victory celebrations by offering your skills in communication, project management, brainstorming, and recruiting. Minimum age is 17; sign up for one project or ongoing support.
MEALS ON WHEELS PROGRAM (Lane County only)
Deliverer Drive, or accompany a driver, on a standard route to deliver 10-26 hot meals to homebound elderly. Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds, have the physical stamina to get in/out of car up to 25 times during route and be able to climb stairs as needed. Mileage reimbursement is provided when own vehicle used. Criminal background and driving record check required. Minimum age is 17; 6-month commitment desired.
Kitchen Support Organize, portion, label, and seal meals for delivery and assist with clean up and recycling. Must be able to stand for 3 hours and lift up to 20 pounds. Food handler's license is required and paid for by Red Cross. Minimum age is 16; 3-month commitment desired.
Team Leader Recruit and/or manage a team of deliverers, develop and maintaining their schedules, and coordinate with program coordinator or director. Minimum age is 18; 1-year commitment desired.
GENERAL VOLUNTEER POSITIONS
Office/Clerical/Administrative Support Provide support for a variety of clerical duties, such as answering telephones, file maintenance, copying/collating, mailings, data entry, and special projects for front office and/or specific departments. Minimum age is 17; 3-month commitment desired.
Bookkeeping Assistant Assist accounting department with bookkeeping, data entry, and/or file maintenance. Minimum age is 16; 3-month commitment desired.
Special Projects/Events Offer your skills in communications, project/people management, daccor/design, brainstorming, goal setting, and a variety of tasks associated with planning and implementing special projects and celebrations. Minimum age is 17.
Maintenance/Repairs Help significantly reduce overhead expenses by maintaining and servicing our automobiles, equipment, buildings and landscaping. Minimum age is 16.
