Q: What if I am not certain about a research topic? Do I have to have a detailed description of my honors topic? A: Please see me (Michael Aguilera - mba@uoregon.edu) to discuss your interests and your concerns. Many honors students begin the program with only a general idea of their topic area and a vague notion of what their research question might be.
Q: I hear a thesis is quite demanding. I'm not certain it's something I can successfully complete. A: Again, stop by to talk with me. I can put you in touch with the students in this year's honors cohort. They can give you a good idea of what's involved.
Q: I'm not graduating on a typical schedule (e.g. Spring 2007). I'm going to graduate earlier or later. A: Often honors students do graduate "earlier" or "later.” Typically we can make adjustments. What's important is don't wait too long to apply. We offer the honors thesis seminar only once a year. The complete process takes three terms.
Q: I'm not sure if I'm going to graduate school. Can I still apply? A: Yes. What matters most is your interest in Sociology and your desire to undertake your own research.
Q: I'm not sure I have the research skills necessary to complete a thesis. I've never done a research project from start to finish. Q: Don't worry. Neither had the students in previous honors cohorts. It is a learning process that we discuss during the honors seminar.
Q: I haven't completed the methods sequence. Can I still do an honors thesis? A: Most likely you can complete the sequence before you begin your actual research. Stop by to talk with me.
I look forward to seeing you. Michael Aguilera, Associate Professor, mba@uoregon.edu, PLC 722, 346-5059
